HINTS Exam Vertigo Risk Tool
Otolaryngology (ENT) specialty tool
Bedside Tool Interface Configuration
Implements the HINTS (Head Impulse, Nystagmus, Test of Skew) bedside diagnostic diagnostic algorithm to differentiate central vestibulopathy (acoustic nerve stroke) from peripheral vestibulopathy (BPPV or Vestibular Neuritis) in continuous acute vestibular syndrome.
Algorithm Checklist Parameters:
- 1. Head Impulse Test of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR)
- 2. Nystagmus characteristics on gaze shift
- 3. Test of Skew (Alternate cover test of vertical eye alignment)
Primary Clinical Application:
Extremely critical screening tool in emergency departments; more sensitive than early MRI scans for ischemic cerebellar strokes.
